Travel context

Entry and documents
Passport valid for the length of stay; no visa for stays up to 180 days. There is a departure tax, usually already inside your ticket.
Money
The colón is the local currency, but medical packages are priced and paid in US dollars, which are widely accepted.
Language
Spanish, with the highest rate of working English among clinical staff in the network. Interpreters are standard at the San José hospitals.
Flights and getting around
San José is a 3 to 5 hour flight from most southern US cities. The private hospitals cluster in the western suburbs, 20 to 40 minutes from the airport by prearranged transfer.
When to go
December to April is dry season, and also high tourist season: book lodging early. Green season rains fall in the afternoon.
Care landscape
Costa Rica's private hospitals hold long-standing JCI accreditation and treat US patients as routine. Recovery hotels near the hospitals cater specifically to surgical patients.
