Bringing prescription medication into the US
General guidance for individual patients. It is not legal advice, and final decisions rest with the FDA and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the border.
- 01
It is technically restricted, but tolerated for personal use
Most medicines bought abroad are not FDA-approved versions, so importing them is generally not permitted. Under its personal importation policy, the FDA usually allows travelers to bring back medicine for their own serious condition when it is for personal use, is not sold on, and carries no unreasonable risk.
- 02
Bring no more than a 90-day supply
The FDA guideline is up to a 3-month supply for personal use. Larger quantities look commercial and are likely to be seized.
- 03
Carry your US prescription
Bring a copy of your US prescription or a letter from your doctor naming the medicine, dose and your condition. A local prescription from the foreign doctor also helps.
- 04
Declare it at the border
Declare all medication to CBP when you re-enter the US. Keep it in its original packaging with labels visible. Undeclared medication can be seized and may bring fines.
- 05
Refrigerated medicines need a plan
Insulins, GLP-1 pens and biologics must stay cold. Use a medical cooling case, keep it in carry-on luggage, and carry the pharmacy receipt.
- 06
Controlled substances are different
Opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants and other controlled substances follow stricter DEA rules. None of the medicines on this site are controlled, and we do not list any.
- 07
Avoid mail-order from abroad
Shipments by mail or courier are inspected more strictly than medicine carried in person, and are often refused. Buying in person at an established pharmacy is the safer route.
- 08
Buy only from established pharmacies
Counterfeit medicines exist. Buy from large licensed chains like those listed here, check the seal and lot number, and keep the receipt.
